Trapezoidal belts
Trapezoidal or V-shaped belts are the most common type of drive belt. Their purpose is to transfer energy between two shafts whose axes are offset from each other. A V-belt, or more precisely its rotational torque, transfers mechanical power from the drive to any other unit. The movement of the crankshaft activates the generator, radiator fan, compressor, water pump, etc. The distinctive feature of a V-belt is its trapezoidal cross-section, which ensures a relatively large friction area. Trapezoidal belts (designed for use in conventional drives) are used in various industrial equipment and agricultural machinery.
UAB “Almeida” has as many as 500 different sizes of trapezoidal belts in its product range.
Types and sizes of trapezoidal belts
Trapezoidal belts are divided into three main types: classic (classical V-belt), narrow profile (Wedge/Narrow V-belt) and low-power drive belts (light duty Fractional Horsepower belt (FHP)). Each type has its own specific marking. These markings are called profiles. The most common profiles for classic belts are 8, Z, A, B, 20*, 25*, D, and E. Narrow profiles include SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC, and 3V, 5V, 8V. FHP profiles include 2L, 3L, 4L, and 5L.
The belt consists of a rubber core and polyester cord, which are “wrapped” in cotton or polyester fabric. The latter is covered with reinforced rubber. The length of the belt is measured according to: outer length (La), inner length (Li), longitudinal length (Lp). Belt dimensions: upper belt width (bo), longitudinal belt width (bp), height (h), longitudinal height (hp).
The classic belt is mainly used in general engineering and the automotive industry, as well as in agricultural machinery. It is economical, resistant to lubricants, ozone gases, abrasive materials, heat, antistatic, and electrically conductive. Operating temperature range from –35 °C to +70 °C. Maximum belt linear speed – 30 m/s.
The narrow profile belt is narrower than the classic belt, which reduces operating and maintenance costs. It is used in both light and heavy industry, is more flexible than the classic belt, generates less heat, and is more resistant to cracking. It is also resistant to lubricants, heat, dust, and abrasive materials, is electrically conductive, and antistatic. Operating temperature range: -30°C to +90°C.
FHP is used in devices with a power rating of no more than 1 HP. That is, low-power household appliances, lawn mowers. FHP is durable and economical. Operating temperature range: -35°C to +100°C.
*Used only in agricultural machinery.
